Halie Sciury's quest for a third straight trip to the state track and field championships came up just short as the Sandy Valley junior finished fifth in the long jump this past weekend at the Division II regional meet at Athens High School.
Sciury's best leap came in her first attempt as she hit the sand 17'6.5 from the board. She fouled on her next two attempts, but made it to the finals with the fourth best jump of the prelims.
With the top four moving on to Columbus, Sciury failed to improve on her distance, and was bumped to fifth by Logan Elm's Lisa Bailey on her final attempt by just over half a foot.
The Athens regional was the toughest in the state, with all four state qualifiers going over 18 feet. Sciury's jump of 17'6.5 was the ninth best combining all the regionals. She would have finished first at Austintown-Fitch, second at Lexington, and fourth at Piqua.
Sciury, who was hampered by an injury for most of the season, will seek to redeem herself a year from now when she closes out her athletic career at Sandy Valley.
