East Canton Middle School students have been part of an effort which has provided more than 80,000 articles of clothing to one of their community churches.
The school's All Stars group recently finished their 12th annual clothing drive, a program which benefits the East Canton Church of God's monthly clothing give away. The school's effort is funded through CommQuest Services, Inc.
Students promoted the drive before it began. Elizabeth Bushey, one of the school's staff members who helped organize the drive explained the collection is about more than just the students.
"It's the teachers, it's the community, it's everyone," Bushey said.
A total of 8,376 items were collected during this year's drive. Each homeroom at the middle school competed for the biggest collection. Craig Linerode's homeroom won that contest with 1,574 items.
Bushey explained the school usually collects between 8,000-10,000 items each year, and the East Canton Church of God anticipates the amount.
Bushey added the school makes a statement by meeting that number.
"It says a lot about how we feel about our very own community," she said.
